This past weekend Strongman Corporation took the show to the Europa Sports festival in Phoenix. Where 9 of the top Heavyweight Pros battled it out for the title of Americas Strongest Man 2017. This would also be the first time that WSM competitor Jerry Pritchett of AZ had been able to compete for the coveted title and this year it was being held was in his hometown. We also saw the return of “Texas Stoneman” Travis Ortmayer of TX. After a 5 year hiatus he stepped back into the ring and he did not disappoint. Event one was an overhead press medley consisting of a 250 DB, 400lb log and a 410 axle clean and press for as many as possible. Many struggled with the event, but Dimitar Savatinov of FL, arguably one of the best pressers in the world, hit the first two implements and almost had the clean on the axle. His 2 reps were good enough for the win here. The most impressive athlete in this event by far was Andrew Clayton of FL who easily pressed the 250 DB, at a bodyweight of 260lbs!
Event 2 was an 1110lb yoke carry for 60ft. Yoke is a brutal event and will test even the best competitors. Brian Clark of AZ took second in a time of 19.32 hitting a massive PR for himself but it was Jerry Pritchett who took the win, running with 1110lbs on his back in 12.52 seconds. Dimitar Savatinov took 3rd.
Event 3 was a 400lb keg carry for distance. That kind of weight is no joke. You feel every ounce of your being just trying to hang on. Out first was Travis Ortmayer of TX. He set a quick pace carrying the keg 171ft. Big man Eric Dawson of MA took the keg 197ft for the win, with Uili Makai of Utah taking 2nd with 188ft. It was impressive to watch these athletes giving all they had until that keg hit the concrete. Max distance carries aren’t fun from a competitor standpoint, but boy does the crowd go wild waiting to see who will push it the farthest. Day 1 ended with Jerry Pritchett out in front with a 5 point lead.
Day 2 on Sunday started with event 4, the axle deadlift. 800lbs for reps from a height of 13”. We saw some huge pulls and a lot of personal bests and big celebrations from the pros. Stan Carradine of CO and Wesley Claborn of GA both pulled 3 massive reps, Travis Ortmayer pulled 5, Dimitar Savatinov pulling 6 reps and Jerry Pritchett pulled an easy 8 reps.
Event 5 Atlas stones. A 4 stone series loaded to a platform. Weights were 300, 345, 370 and 407. At this point, 5 competitors were within 1.5 points of each other, this event would make or break their placings. I am sure you all may remember the king of stones, Travis Ortmayer. He came out raging and set a blistering time to beat of 18.52. Wesley Claborn followed that up with an 18.06. It was so impressive! Eric Dawson took 3rd in a time of 20.56. Jerry Pritchett loaded only what he needed, as he was already ahead enough to seal the deal and take the title of Americas Strongest Man 2017. This win was sweet and a long time coming for Jerry! Huge Congratulations to Jerry Pritchett!
